Finding Fulfillment in God’s Word: Savoring Spiritual Nourishment

I love my chocolate, and sometimes, I try to make dessert into its own food group. I also love trying different restaurants (mostly because I hate to cook). I do like discovering new places to try new foods.

Every once in a while, I find food that isn’t only yummy but healthy too. Unfortunately, this week has been full of sugary treats. They may taste amazing, but they are not always good for the tummy or the waistline. Sometimes, these delectable goodies cause discomfort like heartburn.

Why spend your money on food that does not give you strength? Why pay for food that does you no good? Listen to me, and you will eat what is good. You will enjoy the finest food.

Isaiah 52:2, NLT

Yikes! God can really cut to the point; can’t he?

Of course, this passage isn’t just talking about food. God is asking us to consume His Word, drink the living water, and indulge in the richness of His wisdom.

Every morning, I sit with my cup of java. I consume the rich flavor. My taste buds dance with excitement as the warm liquid reaches my lips. The smell as I drink it is so soothing.

The same with God’s Word. I sit with my Bible open. I am ready to consume all He has to offer. My heart leaps when I find a few words that I know God has placed in front of me,

just for me,

for today,

for now.

Words of confidence, guidance, encouragement, and direction all take residence in my heart. So, I study and listen to what He tells me. Of course, sometimes His words are a little harder to swallow when they call me out or re-direct me.

Regardless, the excitement of knowing that God is talking with me in the intimacy of the moment is overwhelming. The Creator of the Universe finds time and ways to make His point to me, in my little corner of the world.

So, as I sip this coffee, I enjoy it, but I am not fulfilled. I am only truly fulfilled when I find the words God has prepared for me

for today,

for now,

for my heart.

My prayer for you is that as you open God’s Word you also find those soul-nourishing words that fill you, soothe your heart, and give you just what you need for today, for now.
