Creating A Prayer Bible: Tips and Cautions

Everywhere I seem to look lately, I see people creating prayer Bibles. YouTubers and bloggers are sharing their experiences, tips, and the beauty of these prayerful creations. A few weeks ago, I shared my Inspire Prayer Bible in this blog post. It is absolutely beautiful, and I love to open it and pray through some of the prayers in it.

As I explore the idea behind a prayer Bible, I am finding ideas I want to run with and cautions we should all consider.

Today, let’s delve deeper into the concept of a prayer Bible and explore its purpose. Come along as I put together my version of a prayer Bible.

The Purpose of a Prayer Bible

Before we dive into the “how-to” of creating one, let’s discuss why a prayer Bible can be such a valuable tool.

In full transparency, sometimes I struggle with the spiritual discipline of prayer. I find myself praying the same words over and over, and in the monotony, I begin to lose the connection of my relationship with the Lord. Instead of connecting with the Lord, my prayers turn into an item on a to-do list.

To combat this monotony, I turn to scripture (after all, isn’t that where all the answers are anyway!). Praying scripture not only helps me with the language of prayer, it also helps me to know that I am praying in agreement with God’s Will. I talked a bit about the power of praying God’s words here.

My goal in creating a prayer Bible is to create an immersive, easily navigable resource that aligns with my prayer goals. Now, let’s get started on the creation process!

Tips for Creating a Prayer Bible

  1. Select the Right Bible: Choosing the right Bible is paramount. Consider its intended use and setup. If it’s for on-the-go use, opt for a compact version. For more creative or worship-focused experiences, consider journaling Bibles like the Inspire Bible. Regardless, the key to the right Bible is to ensure that the text is easily readable since the goal is to pray scripture.
  2. Consider the Scripture to Highlight: Books like “Fervent” by Priscilla Shirer can help you identify themes and verses to highlight. Mark scripture that resonates with your prayer focus, making it easy to find and reference during your prayer time.
  3. Choose Materials Thoughtfully: Simplicity often works best. Create tabs and use color-coordinated pens or highlighters to mark similar themes, making it visually organized and efficient.
  4. Be Authentic and Vulnerable: Your prayer Bible should reflect your authentic self. Don’t hesitate to be genuine and honest with God as you record your prayers and reflections. Share your joys, struggles, doubts, and questions.

Cautions to Consider in Creating a Prayer Bible

  1. Selecting Scripture: While many bloggers and YouTubers provide lists of scripture to mark, it’s crucial to consider each verse carefully. Ensure that you pray verses in their proper context, avoiding misinterpretation.
  2. Respecting God’s Word: Approach your prayer Bible with reverence and respect. Ensure that your notes and additions do not diminish the sacredness of the original text. Scripture such as Deuteronomy 4:2 and Revelation 22:18-19 remind us not to add to or take away from scripture. As we create, we must use care to read God’s Word for what it says and not what we want it to say.
  3. Discernment of Interpretation: While authenticity is vital, exercise discernment to avoid letting emotions guide your interpretation of scripture. Wisdom ensures that you interpret scripture accurately.

A prayer Bible can be a transformative tool to enrich prayer. By selecting the right Bible, marking scripture carefully, choosing materials thoughtfully, and remaining authentic while practicing discernment, a prayer Bible becomes a meaningful prayer resource. Remember to approach the process with respect for God’s Word and a commitment to understanding scripture in its true context. Happy praying!
