Psalm 139: A Guide to Embracing Your Identity

Ever see something and think: “That is so me!”? A while ago, my family and I were on vacation, and we saw this bag. If you have been around Proverbs3Three for very long, you know that this bag belongs on my shoulder! This bag reflects the identity of Proverbs3Three! Even though it was a bit more than I would typically spend on a bag for myself, my husband and son persisted in making sure we bought it. Those two spoil me! The way they take care of me, love me, and bless my heart truly makes me feel seen, known, and loved.

How incredible when we come across something that resonates with our personality or represents our unique identity so well!

But what about our identity in Christ?

Those who have followed me know I often reflect a bit on identity. Probably half of the blog posts I’ve written have related to that theme. Well, today, let’s stick with that theme a bit more.

Psalm 139

Before we go any further, I want to invite you to pause and read Psalm 139. If it’s a passage you know well, read it in a translation you don’t typically use. When Scripture becomes familiar, our eyes can skim and our hearts can drift. So if you usually read NLT or NIV, try CSB. If you’re an NKJV reader, try ESV. Seriously, don’t keep reading this post until you’ve read Psalm 139.

Identity is the core of who we are, shaping our beliefs, values, and actions. Yet, it is not uncommon to struggle with identity, especially in a world that bombards us with unrealistic standards, pressure, and comparisons.

The psalmist beautifully captures the essence of God’s omniscience, omnipresence, and loving care for each one of us. This Psalm reminds us we are seen, loved, and known by our Creator.

However, depending on my perspective, my emotional reaction to this Psalm can vary. Sometimes, when I feel secure and content, the words bring immense comfort, like being embraced in my Creator’s loving arms. I feel known and cherished, just like when my husband and son urged me to get my new bag. It is a beautiful feeling that reaffirms my connection with the Lord.

Yet, there are moments when I feel vulnerable and exposed. The idea of God knowing my thoughts and searching my heart can be frightening, especially when I grapple with feelings of inadequacy, guilt, or shame.

So, how do I reconcile these conflicting emotions?

Embracing My Identity

The answer lies in finding and embracing my identity in Christ. When I am secure in who I am as a child of God, the words of Psalm 139 become a source of immense comfort. As I continue to learn how to embrace a healthy dose of vulnerability, let us go a bit deeper into embracing our identity in Christ:

Understanding my Worth in Christ

Embracing my identity in Christ means understanding my inherent worth and value as an individual loved by God. I am fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). When I remember this truth, I can confidently approach God, knowing He accepts me just as I am (even as He plans to mold me to look more like His Son). He accepts me because he chose me to be in Christ. He chose me before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4).

Freedom from Shame and Guilt

When I fully accept my identity in Christ, I experience the freedom from shame and guilt that otherwise would weigh me down. God knows me intimately, and despite my flaws and imperfections, He loves me unconditionally. The assurance of His forgiveness allows me to lay down my burdens, repent, and receive the gift of forgiveness.

Security in God’s Love

Knowing my identity in Christ provides me a sense of security that nothing in this world can offer (not even my husband, who loves me so much). I am held in the arms of a loving and faithful God, who will never leave me nor forsake me. This security enables me to face life’s challenges with confidence and courage. (Practicing vulnerability here…even as I type these words and know them in my head, my heart quickly forgets them when challenges get hard. Shew! I am thankful for forgiveness and grace!)

Guidance and Pupose

Understanding my identity in Christ helps me know my purpose. As I align my life with God’s will, I find fulfillment in using my unique gifts and talents to serve others and bring glory to His name.

Books have been written, podcasts have been recorded, and social media is full of advice to “find your purpose.” Friends, this is not hard! Your purpose is so simple…you were created to bring glory to God! How do we do that? Well, that is pretty simple too. Use your gifts and talents to make Him known. Let’s not overcomplicate this question.

Overcoming Comparison

In a world obsessed with comparison, finding comfort in my identity in Christ allows me to break free from the trap of constant comparison. I can celebrate the successes of others without feeling threatened because I know we are all on our own God-ordained journey.

Living Authentically

Embracing my identity in Christ empowers me to live authentically. I no longer need to be so guarded or pretend to be someone I am not. Instead, I can be genuine and transparent, knowing that God’s purpose for me is good. He is calling me to live in that purpose…He is calling me to be the light, to live for his glory.

Allowing Sanctification to Refine My Identity

I often need to remind myself that becoming comfortable with my identity in Christ is a lifelong journey. Until glory, I am being sanctified day by day. Insecurity will pop up. Old habits of thinking will resurface. But I can choose—again and again—to anchor myself in God’s truth. I can choose the strength of the Holy Spirit, who empowers me to do the good works God prepared for me long ago. (Honestly, I might need to print this blog post just to remind myself of what I already know! Maybe it’s a James 1:23–24 moment.)

Just as my family knew I “needed” that bag, God knows what we need. He knows us so perfectly. He sees us. His desire is for us to find our ultimate fulfillment and purpose in Him. So, let us celebrate our unique identity in Christ and live boldly as the beloved children of God we were created to be.

So let’s celebrate our identity in Christ.
Let’s walk in the boldness of being His beloved children.
And let us rest in this unshakable truth:

Our Creator sees us.
Our Creator knows us.
Our Creator loves us perfectly.
