Be sure to read to the bottom for the big announcement…it’s coming!!!
A friend was recently sharing with me about the type of books he read compared to the type of books his wife read. He preferred books focused on apologetics. His wife preferred books focusing on the heart. His comment solidified some ideas I had for a new direction for Proverbs3Three.
As I look at texts on the bookstore shelves by Christian authors, I see two very distinct areas of writing. One, written by men, contains text that addresses hermeneutics, exegesis, and apologetics. The other is more feel good types of books which are mostly written by women.
Women, it’s time for us to step into the academia of biblical study. It’s time for us to stop separating deep Bible study and an emotional connection to the text. Scripture requires both. Our growth requires both. Even as I say these words, I realize many may bristle at the idea of studying the Bible so deeply. But as believers, we are to know our Creator, which demands that we go deeper.
Proverbs3Three Direction
Join me as we shift a little bit in this blog over the next few months. Let’s start using our God-given ability to think, process, study, and learn. From this deep study we will connect on a heart level to our Savior, Creator, and Father.
We do not have to separate an academic study of scripture and a heart-level transformation. I would argue that doing so is not giving scripture the level of authority in our lives that it deserves.
“And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’”
Mark 12:30 ESV
If we must love the Lord with all of our heart and mind, we must engage all of our heart and mind when we approach scripture. This conversation is not an either/or debate. We must have both!
Now, the caution…as you begin pursuing deeper study that engages the heart, cling to 1 Thessalonians.
“but test everything; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.”
1 Thessalonians 5:21-22 ESV
The more I search for good study resources the more I also find non-biblical philosophies and ideas. Some of these include progressive Christianity, prosperity Gospel, New Age ideas, and New Thought ideas. We must test everything. In doing so, we are engaging our minds.
“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”
Jeremiah 17:9-10 ESV
As you dive deep into study, allow the Lord to search your heart and test your mind. Pray that he would reveal to you any philosophies or ideas that are contrary to His Word.
With this idea, a few updates for this blog space!
Study the Book of Pslams

First, starting in January, we will begin a study of the book of Psalms. Blog posts will be a space to explore connecting exegesis and heart. You can engage in this study with me in our Facebook group. I’m both excited and nervous! I love teaching. I love studying God’s Word, and I love providing some encouragement in this blog. My hope is that my writing will still do all of those things, but go a bit deeper in our scripture study. Of course, if you’ve been here for a while, you know my biggest fear. I certainly welcome your prayers!
