The Power of Obedience: Choosing Your 2024 One Word

Dive into the excitement of the New Year with me! Now, I get it – “obedience” doesn’t exactly scream “party time,” but stay with me. The Lord used this word in a mighty way in 2023!

Obedience was not my first choice for the word of the year. I had my heart set on “dwell.”

Picture it: a cozy word that wraps you in a warm hug. I even had a necklace with the word “dwell” on it – that’s how committed I was to making it my mantra for 2023.

But life had other plans.

Amid my 2023 chronological Bible study journey, guess what kept popping up? Yep, you got it – good ol’ obedience.

My 2023 was a rollercoaster of weird work experiences – the good, the bad, and the downright bizarre. Have you ever been at a crossroads where you questioned if you should keep going? Do you keep going in your career path? Do you keep going in your extracurricular activities? Do you keep going in your ___ (you fill in the blank)?

Well, that was my last year. And you know what kept me going? Obedience. As long as I followed the path the Lord laid out for me, I knew I was on the right track. I am thankful the Lord taught me the beauty, value, security, and richness that came with being obedient to His Word, His calling, and His Truth.

So, here we are, stepping into the wild unknown of 2024.

Do you pick a word to guide your year? If not, maybe it’s time to consider it. A quick Google search (because let’s be real, Google knows all) will lead you to resources like They will tell you why ditching the traditional New Year’s resolution for a single, powerful word might just be the game-changer you need.

Remember Proverbs 16:9?

We can make our plans,
but the Lord determines our steps.

Proverbs 16:9, NLT

Now, let me drop some wisdom on you from my one-word journey:

1. Choose a word that defines who you want to be.

I aimed for “dwell” because I craved peace and wanted to master the art of rest. Your word should be your compass, guiding you to become the person you aspire to be.

In my journey, I learned that I cannot dwell if I do not understand obedience. Obedience was my prerequisite.

2. Pick a word that reflects what you want to do.

“Dwell” for me meant spending quality time with Jesus, forging a deeper connection. Your word should align with your actions, propelling you toward your goals.

In my journey, I learned that obedience created the self-discipline necessary for quality time with Jesus. Obedience set me up to be ready to dwell.

Before you embark on any grand plans, make those resolutions, or adopt a “one-word” mantra, there are two crucial things to nail down – know yourself and know your God. Trust me, without these, you are setting yourself up for an uphill battle.

Though I desired to settle into dwelling with the Lord, the Lord took me on a journey of obedience, where I came to know both myself and Him better.

1. Obedience in my Bible study rocked my world.

It wasn’t just about reading verses; it was a daily rendezvous with the Divine that deepened my connection with Him.

2. Obedience at work brought clarity.

I am not defined by my work, achievements, or fancy titles. I am defined by the One who matters most – my God. I’m a cherished child of the Almighty.

3. Obedience in my heart birthed eternal desires.

A year of grasping the concept of “obedience” opened my heart to yearn for things that truly matter.

Now, I’m ready to dwell.

So, as I’ve let scripture take residence in my heart this year, I am better equipped to understand what it means to dwell in the shelter of the Most High.

Colossians 3:16 says, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly,” and Psalm 91:1 reassures us, “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.”

While “dwell” ended up not being my word for 2023, I’m eager to see if it will be for 2024!

As you ponder who you are and who your God is, consider embracing a “one-word” journey this year. But here’s the kicker – hold onto it loosely. Let it dance in the wind of obedience, guiding you on this wild, unpredictable journey that will be 2024.

In the comments below, let me know what “one word” you might be considering for 2024.
